Objective
Develop a virtual reality experience that would work as an attraction in its own right inside the aquarium and extend the visit with something a tank cannot show.
Virtual reality for Atlantis Aquarium at the Xanadú shopping centre
Intu Xanadú needed an immersive experience to complement Atlantis Aquarium, the first interactive aquarium in Europe.
Develop a virtual reality experience that would work as an attraction in its own right inside the aquarium and extend the visit with something a tank cannot show.
An aquarium shows marine life from outside the glass. Virtual reality made it possible to cross to the other side and place the visitor in the water, which is precisely what an aquarium cannot offer.
An immersive attraction built into the aquarium route: in-house development, equipment and staging designed to run daily with the general public.
Every department was involved, from script and modelling through to installation in the room. The experience was built specifically for the space and for the centre’s visitor profile.
The viewer steps into a diving cage and descends into the deep, where large marine animals appear at real scale. It is the kind of scene people remember on the way out and talk about afterwards.
