Objective
Show the monastery as it is today and, at the same time, rebuild it in 3D so that visitors can compare what remains with what once stood and travel back to its heyday.
3D recreation and virtual tour of the Monastery of Santa María de Rioseco
Only part of the Monastery of Santa María de Rioseco still stands today. The 3D recreation allows it to be seen whole once more.
Show the monastery as it is today and, at the same time, rebuild it in 3D so that visitors can compare what remains with what once stood and travel back to its heyday.
Centuries have taken a heavy toll on the site. Digital reconstruction is the only way to bring back into view elements that no longer exist, without touching the ruin itself.
A digital heritage resource that lets visitors see the monastery as it is and as it was, and that preserves a record of the site against further decay.
The work relied on 360º photography and on a prior research process: many of the original elements are now scattered across nearby villages, and had to be located and recorded before they could be recreated.
The project came in two pieces: a virtual tour you can walk freely and a guided 360º film. It can be seen at the monastery itself, at the visitor centre and on its website.
