Gas Natural Fenosa wanted its field operators to practise changing XS fuses before climbing a real tower.

A manoeuvre carried out at height and under voltage leaves no room for rehearsal. In virtual reality it can be repeated as often as needed, mistakes carry no consequences and what has been learned can be measured.
A virtual reality application for HTC Vive that faithfully recreates the replacement of an XS fuse on a medium-voltage tower, with several scenarios reproducing everyday field situations.
Beyond the technical steps of the manoeuvre, the application also trains in protective practice and collects data to assess each user. Every department took part: needs analysis, process planning, storytelling, pre-layout, 3D modelling and texturing, sequencing, functionality and conditionals. A complete practice set was also fitted out on the client's own premises.
A study by the independent consultancy SOCIOGRAPH showed that workers paid more attention, learned more and achieved far better results with virtual reality than with traditional training.
